A Review of 16 Foot Retractable Dog Leash

You need to think about so much when taking care of your dog. From the food you buy through to the safety of your home, you need to consider everything to ensure your dog’s safety.

Furthermore, you have to apply that same line of thinking to any dog leashes you buy. A poorly built leash may break at an inopportune moment, which could cause your dog to escape from you and get lost.

That’s why you need to know everything about the leashes you buy. With that in mind, we’re going to offer you a helping hand by taking a look at one of the most popular products in the market: the DixPet 16 Foot Retractable Dog Leash.

The Basics

As the name says, this DixPet leash extends to a maximum distance of 16 feet, meaning you can offer your dog plenty of freedom, while also maintaining control over the animal’s distance from you. Let’s look at some of the basic features in more detail.

Strength

Ideal for small and medium sized dogs, you may find that the leash struggles to contain large dogs who have more power. This is something that you need to be aware of before you buy, but it’s not a commentary on the quality of the leash itself. It has been built for smaller dogs, and will do a stellar job of helping you keep them under control, no matter how lively they get. The leash works well for dogs up to a maximum of 20 kilograms, or 44 pounds.

Portability

The cord retracts fully when the leash isn’t in use, which makes storage easy. You can pop it onto a clothes hanger via the handle, which means you can also keep it out of reach of your dog or any children in the house. Even if you don’t choose to do this, you’ll find it slots easily into most cupboards and storage spaces.

Handling

The leash comes with a brake button, which you can use to stop the cord from extending instantly. This features comes to the fore when you’re walking by busy roads and you want to keep your dog under control. You’ll find the brake is very reliable, as it stops the cord from extending instantly, allowing you to retract the lead as needed. This makes it ideal for those emergency situations where it looks like your dog may escape the leash or get into trouble. It also has a smaller button that you can use to unlock the brake when it’s safe for your dog to run around again.

Materials

DixPet have used Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) in the leash’s construction. A polymer, ABS combines the best features of the three materials used in its construction to ensure strength and durability. You should find that the leash and its buttons stand up well to extended use, and that you can use it no matter what the weather is like outside.

Low Visibility Use

One of the leash’s most attractive features is the reflective patches that you will find on the handle. Couple these with the neon components that DixPet has used in the handle and you have a leash that’s ideal for use in areas with low visibility. Your dog will always be able to see where you are, as will road users and anybody else you need to alert to the presence of the animal. The patches can reflect light from sources up to 160 yards away, which gives motorists plenty of time to react to your presence so they can slow their vehicles down if needed.

Our Verdict

With spent some time using the DixPet 16 Foot Retractable Dog Leash and we can say that it delivers on every promise that it makes. At no point did we feel as though the dog was unsafe while on the lead, with the brake button in particular proving useful when trying to rein the animal in and keep it safe while walking on busy roads.

We also examine the materials closely and found the leash itself to be very sturdy. There were no signs of wear and tear on the cord after extended use, despite the amount of times we extended and retracted the cord.

The handle is superb as well. It feels sturdy and solid in your hand, which adds a little extra confidence when walking your dog. The grip fits comfortable around your fingers, which makes it an ideal choice for long walks. We also liked the fact that we could retract the cord and hang the leash up by its handle when it wasn’t in use.

Overall, this leash is an excellent choice for anybody who has a small or medium-sized dog. It looks the part, has several important safety features, and is durable enough to stand up to extended use with even the most excitable dogs.
